Per i più attenti seguaci di questo blog, Evan non è un nome nuovo; sapete benissimo che seguiamo il suo lavoro da tempo, per noi è un punto di riferimento ed è per questo che per noi è un onore averlo intervistato.

In questa intervista ho deciso di lasciare sia le versioni inglesi sia tradotte delle domande e delle risposte, ma bando alle ciance vi lascio con l’intervista.

PR : first thing first; for those reading this article who don’t know you very well, please tell what you do covering the team

PR : Evan, per chi non ti conoscesse ancora molto bene, per favore raccontaci di cosa ti occupi.

 EL : Well, my goal when I started covering the team full-time was to educate fans on what’s actually going on during games. Not the drama stuff some others like to talk about but the actual football strategy. I’m lucky that I’m allowed to take that angle. So I write a lot of film breakdown type pieces as well as share my thought on film on Twitter.

Quando ho iniziato, il mio obiettivo era quello di educare i fans su quanto succede in campo realmente durante le partite; non i soliti drama che piace a tanti altri disquisire, ma la vera e propria strategia di gioco. Sono fortunato che mi sia concesso lavorare da questa prospettiva. Quindi io scrivo molti pezzi di analisi, i cosiddetti “film breakdown” e li illustro anche su Twitter.

PR : how’s working for CLNS media?

PR : Come ti trovi a lavorare per CLNS Media?

EL :” Working for CLNS has been a dream come true. As a kid that grew up in the Boston area, it was always my dream to cover the local teams. As I got older, it became more specific to football and the Patriots. So to be doing this now is surreal. “

Un vero e proprio sogno che si realizza; essendo un ragazzo cresciuto nell’area di Boston, è sempre stato un mio sogno seguire i teams locali, e con la crescita, la mia attenzione si è concentrata interamente sul football e sui Patriots. Pertanto ciò che faccio oggi è veramente magnifico.

PR : What is the first thing you noticed getting closer to the team that you never imagined? the one thing that stood out to you the most?

PR : Quale è la prima cosa che hai notato, lavorando a stretto contatto col team, che non ti saresti mai aspettato? la cosa che da subito ti ha colpito maggiormente?

EL : “Besides all the work and long hours everyone puts in, I’d say the most surprising thing is that sometimes there’s no analytic explanation for why something happens on the field other than instincts and the human element. I figured players and coaches would be able to explain every little detail, but sometimes it’s truly as simple as it seems; a player just went out there and made a play.”

A parte tutto il lavoro e le tante ore che ognuno di loro impegna in quello che fa, direi che la cosa più sorprendente è stato scoprire come a volte non ci siano vere e proprie spiegazioni analitiche perchè qualcosa è successo sul campo a parte istinto del giocatore ed elemento umano; immaginavo che ogni piccolo dettaglio avesse una spiegazione concreta in ogni dettaglio, ma spesso è veramente molto più semplice di quello che immaginiamo : un giocatore semplicemente è sceso in campo ed ha fatto una giocata.

PR : What changed in your way to approach team analysis since you cover the team from the inside?

PR : cosa è cambiato nel tuo approccio da quando sei a stretto contatto col team?

EL : “I think I have a greater appreciation for how difficult it is to play the game at this level. As a fan, you get emotional, and you can be quick to place blame or put down a player or the team. Once you add the human element to this, you realize that everyone makes mistakes, and most things are fixable with hard work. In other words, you’re still critical, but you’re nicer in your approach when describing poor play.”

Credo di avere capito davvero quanto sia difficile questo gioco soprattutto a questo livello. Come tifoso, sei spesso troppo reattivo e si fa troppo veloce ad incolpare qualcuno o a giudicare le loro performances, ma arrivi a comprendere che sono esseri umani e realizzi che ognuno di loro sbaglia, e che la maggior parte delle cose è risolvibile solo col duro lavoro. In altre parole, rimani critico ma con un approccio più tecnico e posato quando analizzi una giocata errata.

PR : What is you overall “grade” on Bill Belichick as a drafter?

PR : Che giudizio dai a Bill Belichick come Drafter ?

EL : “A-. I would’ve given Belichick an “A,” but lately, he hasn’t been as automatic in the early-rounds as we are accustomed to seeing. In all honesty, the second-guessing of Belichick’s draft history is one of the most perplexing things to me when it comes to Patriots analysis. He’s truly one of the best talent evaluators I’ve ever witnessed. He takes calculated risks on players with an injury history that he deems to have elite-level talent because the Patriots don’t typically have high draft picks, and he takes players that fit the Patriot Way a bit earlier than some would like because he understands the importance of team culture and work ethic. Belichick is easily one of the best in the business when it comes to the draft, and all you have to do is compare the other 31 teams to his draft history to find that out.”

A – . Avrei dato una “A” piena se non fosse che ultimamente, nei primi rounds, non è stato automatico come siamo abituati. Onestamente, il dubitare di Bill Belichick in fase di draft è una delle cose che meno riesco a comprendere e che mi lascia più perplesso quando si parla di Patriots. Lui è veramente uno dei migliori a valutare il talento che io abbia mai visto. Prende dei rischi calcolati su giocatori che hanno magari avuto qualche infortunio ma sui quali lui crede ci sia buon materiale per lavorare, perchè abitualmente i Pats non hanno scelte alte, e lui prende giocatori che rispondono alle caratteristiche della cosiddetta “Patriot way” un poco prima di quando li avrebbero presi altri, perchè capisce l’importanza della cultura del team e dell’etica del lavoro. Belichick è facilmente uno dei migliori quando si parla di draft e per rendersene conto basta paragonare i draft delle altre 31 squadre ai suoi per capirlo.

PR : Do you feel that Pats players have “less fun” than other team’s players or those are just rumors from the outside?

PR : Credi davvero alla storiella che i giocatori dei Patriots si divertano meno di altri?

EL : “I think that all depends on your perspective. The Patriots run things like a business. There’s plenty of times to have fun and goof around, but at the end of the day, they’re there to win championships. They don’t do this for fun. They do it to win. And that kind of atmosphere isn’t for everyone. So the players have plenty of fun. They’re usually very loose and happy in the locker room, but they have a job to do, and they know it. The ultimate goal isn’t to have fun.”

Credo dipenda dal tuo punto di vista; i Pats gestiscono le cose come un business. Ci sono momenti in cui ci si diverte e si scherza, ma alla fine della fiera si è qui per vincere anelli. Non lo fanno per divertirsi, lo fanno per vincere, e questo tipo di atmosfera non è per tutti. Quindi direi che i giocatori che sono qui si divertono, sono solitamente molto sciolti e felici negli spogliatoi, ma hanno un lavoro da svolgere e lo sanno, perchè l’obiettivo primario non è il divertimento.

PR : How do you feel about the Patriots defense, do you believe that this group is skilled enough to win a championship?

PR : Che ne pensi della nostra difesa, pensi sia sufficiente per vincere il Super Bowl?

EL : “The Patriots defense has holes like every team, and I do think there’s some reason for concern with their veteran players possibly declining, but they have plenty of talent to win a Super Bowl with their advantage in coaching. Ultimately, what the Patriots defense needs the most is for their veterans such as Devin McCourty, Dont’a Hightower and Patrick Chung to elevate their play and show they aren’t in decline. If those three, especially the first two, are falling off they could have some big-picture issues on that side of the ball.”

La difesa ha dei difetti come quella di ogni team, e penso che ci siano alcuni aspetti preoccupanti poichè alcuni veterani stanno mostrando cenni di possibile fase calante delle loro carriere, ma hanno abbastanza talento per vincere un Super Bowl, soprattutto col livello del coaching staff. Ciò di cui necessita maggiormente questa difesa è che i suoi veterani come D-Mac, Hightower e Chung elevino il loro livello di gioco e dimostrino di non essere in declino. Se questi tre, soprattutto i primi due, continueranno ad avere appannamenti, potrebbero esserci grossi punti interrogativi.

PR : What’s your take on trading Jimmy Garoppolo? from a team building standpoint i think it would have been the right choice but maybe to get rid of Brady was too much even for Belichick?

PR : Cosa ne pensi della trade di Garoppolo? forse dal punto di vista di team building sarebbe stato opportuno tenerlo ma cedere Brady sarebbe stato troppo anche per Belichick?

EL : ” I don’t think it would’ve been wise to trade Tom Brady and here are my reasons why:

• First, Brady is still playing at an MVP level and does things that take expert level knowledge of football to understand such as setting protections and checking out of bad plays at the line of scrimmage that Jimmy Garoppolo does not do yet. Many quarterbacks young or old ever get to Brady’s level in the details.
• Second, as we saw this year with Garoppolo, there’s no guarantee that Garoppolo has the durability to last 16-19 games per season. He was hurt in 1.5 starts back in 2016 and again in three-plus starts this season. One of Brady’s best traits has been his ability to stay healthy.
• Third, you know what you have with Brady, and although we can predict what we think Garoppolo will be, there was no guarantee he’d be an elite level quarterback.
• And fourth, if you trade Brady, the best quarterback of all-time and the best player in team history, what does that say to the other veteran players on the roster? Is that giving guys like Gronk, Edelman, and others piece of mind? If Brady can get traded, what does that say about the job security of the other 52 players? Do you think those players would agree that it gives them the best chance to win another Super Bowl now? More so than any discussion about Brady’s age or Garoppolo’s talent, you risk losing the locker room if you make a move like that. We know this, if they had traded Brady, they would’ve also lost Gronkowski. That’s a guarantee.”

Non penso sarebbe stato saggio cedere Brady e vi spiego perchè :

• Primo, Brady sta giocando a livelli da MVP e fa un sacco di cose importantissime che non si vedono come chiamare le protezioni sulla linea di scrimmage, e annullare chiamate che si rivelerebbero inefficaci, che Jimmy non è ancora in grado di fare. Molti QB’s giovani o veterani non hanno queste capacità e questo livello di attenzione per i dettagli
• secondo, non abbiamo nessuna certezza che Garoppolo abbia la stoffa per reggere un intera stagione; si è fatto male nel 2016 e di nuovo quest’anno, ed una delle migliori caratteristiche di brady è la cura della sua forma fisica e la resistenza
• terzo, con Brady sai cosa hai, con Jimmy puoi immaginarlo ma certezze non ne avresti avute
• quarto, se cedi uno come Brady, che messaggio dai al roster? cosa possono pensare le stelle come Edelman, Gronkowski e altri ? come fai a convincerli che il loro posto a roster è sicuro e che vuoi vincere un Super Bowl? al di là di tutte le questioni su Brady e Garoppolo, ci sarebbe stato il pericolo di perdere uno spogliatoio con una mossa del genere e lo sappiamo con sicurezza che avrebbe significato perdere Gronkowski.

PR : The special team is struggling, do you believe all the changes in the rules are responsible for those poor performances?

PR : Credi che le difficoltà dello special team derivino dai cambi di regolamento NFL ?

EL : ” On kickoff coverage, I think the rule changes have a lot to do with the issues they’re having. That doesn’t excuse allowing 97-yard returns as they did against the Chiefs, but the rules now prohibit the coverage team from getting a running start on kickoffs, and therefore it takes longer for the unit to make their way down the field. Belichick told me this week that that specific rule change has, “definitely slowed things down.” So I do wonder if they change their approach now that they’ve seen how the rules change things.” 

Sul coverage da kickoff, io penso di sì. Questo ovviamente non giustifica concedere 97 yards di ritorno come successo contro i Chiefs, ma le nuove regole proibiscono al team che calcia di avere un vantaggio di corsa al kickoff, e questo fa sì che ci si metta più tempo a correre il campo. Belichick questa settimana mi ha detto che questo cambio di regola ha rallentato molto lo sviluppo della giocata, quindi mi chiedo se o cosa faranno per migliorare ora che sta diventando un problema.

PR : What is your idea on Trent Brown after 6 weeks of football? could he be a long term solution?

PR : Che idea ti sei fatto di Trent Brown. può essere lui la risposta definitiva nel ruolo di left tackle?

EL : ” Brown has been extremely impressive since we started watching him play back in training camp. His foot speed and flexibility is rare for a player his size, and he has shown some next-level understanding of pass blocking. I see him have some issues with sinking in his stance to block pass rushers that go underneath his size, and he can get caught flat-footed at times. In run blocking, he has had issues with his footwork which has led to problems with balance and controlling his massive upper body.  I’ve had my concerns about his run blocking, but in recent weeks he seems to be taking to the coaching he’s receiving, and he’s cleaned up a lot of things in that regard. I think there’s a good chance the Patriots extend Brown on a short-term deal. He has shown he can hold down the position and even do some things that make the team better, but the future of the position is still 2018 first-round pick Isaiah Wynn.”

Brown è stato veramente sorprendente da quando abbiamo iniziato a seguirlo al training camp. La sua velocità di passo è incredibile per uno con le sue dimensioni, e ha dimostrato di comprendere molti concetti complessi di pass blocking. Ha ancora qualche problema con rushers più piccoli di lui che lo attaccano e che spesso lo lasciano sul posto, mentre sulle corse ha avuto problemi con l’equilibrio ed il movimento dei piedi in corsa, dovuti al controllo che deve avere del suo immenso corpo. ero molto dubbioso io stesso per le sue prestazioni sulle corse, ma nelle ultime settimane gli allenamenti stanno dando i loro frutti e sembra più pulito ed educato da questo punto di vista. Credo che il team possa tenerlo con un contratto breve, perchè ha dimostrato che può dare un valore aggiunto al team, ma ad oggi penso ancora che il ruolo sia, una volta recuperato, di Isaiah Wynn.
